To Bare or Not to Bare? That is the question.

Breasts Not Bombs will be demonstrating in On the steps of the Capitol on Monday because we find that spending $8 milliion dollars on this special election is indecent, and harmful to the people of California.

We were asked in Federal Court yesterday by Judge Garland Burrell, what Exposing our breasts have to do with free speech.

We choose this manner because exposing our breasts speaks louder than signs and banners and marching. We feel that Our breasts express the most powerful, non violent, simple statement to the threats, lies and corruption that dominate the political scene. We say that our bodies are decent and nurturing and wholesome and that interfering with a woman's right to choose is indecent, that blaming teachers for the mess our public schools are in is indecent, we say that gerrymandering political districts for politcal gain is indecent.

Our attempt to get a restraining order against the CHP was denied.

The Women from Breasts Not Bombs are being threatened with arrest for obscene and offensive behavior when we are looking at government official that lie to grand juries, leak top secret information that compromises the security of the United States, Launder money, fix intelligence to justify invading a sovereing nation, maintain secret detention centers, exercise torture which violates which violates the geneva convention. I ask you what is obscene? What is indecent?

So he $64,000.00 question is, will we bare our breasts on Monday?

Well, that's for us to know and you to find out. See you there.

I think it is obscene that this form of protest would not be protected under the First Amendment. The symbolism that you have outlined has to represent dissenting speech. It could not be clearer. When you make the direct analogy between breasts and nuturing and then contrast that with war and destructiveness, you have a very powerful message. One that, of course, those wielding corrupt power would want to go unseen. That said, such a demonstration should not be allowed to degenerate into a sideshow of coarse exhibitionism. And don't think that the corporate media isn't waiting to jump on that "story." Anything to discredit the peace movement. My best wishes to all your efforts.

You go girl! Let them see those sweet teats! If a flabby man can expose his sick man boobs then a woman should be able to expose her beautiful breasts!

Hello. I believe that a few years ago, women in New York sued for the right to go topless under the "equal protection under law" provisions of the Constitution. You may be able to do the same thing, and forever set aside being threatened by law enforcement when you protest.

Here are details of the ruling in NY, which allows women to go topless wherever men are allowed to do so:

here is another link which highlights the NY ruling:

Enjoy and keep up the fight.

Hello all--Kudos to you for actually doing something public to protest. And the positive, I suppose, is that you will get some attention from opponents of the War, and nudge to get off their asses and get out and march. On the negative side, bare-breasted protests are probably counter-productive in terms of the Capitol Hill audience. Alas, these are not the seventies any more.

Best to you all.

to susan: getting arrested is not funny. i was there at the capital and sherry`s arrest was both very sad and shocking. for the CHP to waste their time & efforts=$$$ on such a non threatening situation really reeks of fascism. (arnold should have been sensitive to this). i applaud the men and women who paticipated and especially sherry and her best friend for their courage and dedication to their cause despite being grief striken from the loss of a loved one. my name is john brown and i am a republican!! next time, i will participate fully.

Very Proud that there are still people out there who understand the hypocrisy of the actions of our Government. Fascist is a kind word in my opinion of the way Americans are being herded like the Sheep they have become into domestic slavery to the Corporations and Elite who now rule this Planet. Citizens Of Planet Earth SALUTES YOU!!!
I have to agree with Superman above, if big obese men can show their ManBoobs why can't you,,, especially as PROTEST.
I am proud to be on the same planet as you and your fellow protestors.. Mind if I link to your blog??
PS: if you get a chance read my last post on Business AS Usual,, on our Corporate Criminals running this country. Keep up the good work,

The level of discourse in this country is sinking to new lows. The ultra lefties and ultra right wingers are equally destructive and dangerous. I hope some day cooler heads will prevail and we will get some common sense back in this country. Some times I feel like I have to support some right wingers in response to the obsurdity of the left. Other times I am left wondering if there is any sanity, liberty, meritocracy, and democracy in this country where partisans have managed to fool people into believing their far right and far left ideologies are mainstream.

What a stupid way to protest, instead of talking about issues and having debate we are writing about the breast. It really cheapens the whole debate.

You're the one writing about the breast. I think the point is to see the issue as nuturing life versus destroying it. So it's the symbolism that we are discussing. And the First Amendment right to free speech.

What are viewers more likely to say when they see you, "wow, they have a point, maybe our govt is corrupt", or "wahoo, topless chicks!" ?
Although you never actually state it, you are going topless to get noticed. While you will succeed in that, you are only asking to be objectified, not listened to. Its really sad that you think this is the answer.

Dan, yes people go 'wahoo, topless chicks', that's the point. There's something amazing and ultimately worth embracing in the power of women's breasts, something more than sex, and more than titillation, something more important than the wars going on around us or even bombs dropping all around us - our basic humanity. Women's breasts represent all of that to us, at least to those of us who know how to respond to the beauty of a woman's body with more than a leacherous grin or a jealous snarl. We're the ones who shape the world and we're the ones she's trying to reach and inspire. She's succeeded beautifully in that. And she's made the government show its true colors in the process, a government that warns her not to go topless because convicted sex offenders are known to frequent the area and then arrests her instead of keeping them in jail.

Sorry girls. You do no such thing -- you just showcase your boobs. Real "empowered" women use ideas and thoughts, rather than sheer exhibitionism.

Gee, I thought that was what she WAS doing. How can one be so blind as to say it was "sheer exhibitionism?" I guess if you're not going to look above a woman's shoulders. . . you'll never see her mind.
